From Narrow Galley to Traditional with a Twist: A Kitchen Remodel

Check out this gorgeous kitchen remodel that absolutely transformed the homeowner’s space!

It’s pretty much impossible to put together a great ‘before and after’ shot when there’s a wall in the way! It’s even more difficult to create a nice wide open kitchen with too many walls, so we decided to do something about it. We worked with our structural engineer and contractor to make sure removing the wall wouldn’t be cost-prohibitive.

Once we got the thumbs up, we finalized our plans to move forward with a kitchen that opened up to the family room space and the dining room, giving these homeowners a kitchen they’d waited over 20 years for!

The homeowners really wanted a kitchen that would be fun and easy to entertain in. They wanted an island with seating, a steam oven, an apron front sink, and a beverage fridge. After living with a separate family room and living room, they hesitated to open up the kitchen so dramatically. They felt like the family room would feel like an extension of the kitchen and not necessarily feel like a space where they would want to kick back and watch a movie, but once we added some furniture to the floor plan, discussed what size sofa, coffee table, and TV console would be appropriate, they started being able to envision themselves enjoying the space, and the open space would invite guests to linger and offer a comfy place to sit.

Even though this kitchen is nice and open, it’s not a large kitchen, and we made good use of every inch we had! Rather than sacrificing cabinet space for a small microwave in one of the three wall cabinets, we had an electrical outlet installed in the pantry cabinet. The homeowners put a small countertop model microwave on a shelf in the pantry. Since they rarely use the microwave, this was a perfect solution!

We kept all of the existing windows, added new can lighting and pretty pendants over the island, and accented the shaker cabinets with three different types of cabinet hardware; cup pulls on the drawers, spindle pulls on the lower doors, pantry doors, and fridge cabinet doors, and beautiful crystal knobs on the wall cabinets.
