From No Counter Space to Chef’s Dream: A Big Kitchen Remodel

Ever feel like you don’t have enough space in your kitchen? This homeowner did too, and look at the amazing transformation from our work together!

If you love to cook and bake, then you know how precious counter space is - not just for the small things you use every day, but for all of the prep that goes into the joy of cooking. Though this kitchen already had tall ceilings and plenty of storage, it had almost zero counter space, especially considering its size!

The layout wasn’t entirely functional, either. Even though the walk-in pantry was nice, it took up valuable real estate and broke up the flow of the kitchen. Much to even the homeowner’s surprise, we implemented a plan that took out the walk-in pantry for one that had a reach-in corner pantry, and yes, they have more storage now than they did before!

When we took out the walk-in pantry, we removed a hall closet (that was barely used) and made the kitchen larger, allowing us to make the island larger - so it could include a wine fridge! One of the key changes to this kitchen was giving the cook tons of workspace on both sides of the 36” gas cooktop, which the previous layout lacked.

Surprisingly, the other changes were fairly minor. The sink and dishwasher stayed in the same locations, the gas cooktop and refrigerator shifted only slightly, and we even re-used the beautiful pendant lights.

One of the coolest cabinet accessories I’ve had the pleasure of incorporating was the base cabinet to store the baker’s rack. The homeowner had the baking rack before the remodel, and it needed to be easily accessible so it could be used at any time, but it needed not to be visible.

We designed the middle cabinet on the back side of the island to have full-height doors and an attached toe kick to look like a regular cabinet, but when the doors open, the toe kick comes with it. The finished hardwood floor is inside the cabinet - the baker’s rack rolls right out of the cabinet!
