From Lived-In Rental to Casual Comfort: A Functional Home Reno

Kitchen before and after

What happens when you decide to renovate your space totally? Complete magic!

This wonderful home had been rented out for many years, and the homeowners decided it was time to move in and live in their beach-side home full-time. They’d owned the home for quite some time and had plenty of time to think about the changes they wanted to make once they made it their permanent home. The kitchen felt closed off from the great room (with amazing vaulted ceilings), and the hallways and closets made the entry to the master suite feel cramped and dark.

Since the house had plenty of storage in other areas, we were willing to sacrifice the unused hallway closets to gain more kitchen space and a more open plan!

Not only did we open up and enlarge the kitchen, but we also reconfigured and remodeled the master bath! The master bath had a tub that the homeowners didn’t use and a rather small shower crammed in with the toilet. We removed the tub, changed the entrance to the closet, and designed a new, larger shower. Even though the shower has a low curb, it’s loaded with accessible features, such as grab bars, a handheld shower head, and niches within easy reach no matter where you’re at in the shower.

Even without the hall closets, the homeowners have more storage (definitely more functional) than before. The kitchen cabinets have more accessible storage with accessories that cater to their needs, the bathroom vanity has more storage (including pull-out hampers!), we added a linen cabinet where the shower used to be, and the walk-in closet remained the same size (we only changed the entry so we could have a towel bar near the shower). Never underestimate the power of the right kind of storage over simply ‘more storage’ - you can have the best of both worlds!
